One truly special vacation is one that takes you to and through New England. Each of these six states has its own special beauty and intrigue. Each has plenty of things to see and do. The area is complete with fabulous beaches, stunning mountains, good food and rich history. Here we will talk about each of the states and a couple of things to think about as you plan your travel there.

Rhode Island is the smallest of the group. But do not think that means it has not a lot to offer. A visit to Newport Beach is as fun and exciting as to any other beach, and maybe more. The coastline is vast and you can even view a whole string of famous ocean view mansions. No visit to Rhode Island is complete without some clam cakes and clam chowder.

Connecticut also has plenty to do for vacationers. Lyme Beach, among others, is available for those looking for some fun and sun. For a little history, there is the home of Mark Twain. See where he lived and created such characters as Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer.

New Hampshire is lovely in the fall with its stunning foliage. Or, if you prefer a summer visit, you can take in Seabrook or Rye Beach. The White Mountains are a good choice no matter what time of year. Sightseers make it a top pick as do hikers and skiers. If time allows, a tour of Dartmouth College is a nice way to spend an afternoon.

For history lovers, you cannot beat Massachusetts. In Boston, home of Samuel and John Adams, folks can visit the Old North Church and Bunker Hill and other stops along freedom trail. Concord and Lexington are close by and really give a sense for what was going on as colonists got closer to declaring independence. When the history lessons are over, take in a ball game at Fenway Park where the Red Sox play. A day trip to Cape Cod is relaxing too.

The only New England state with no coastline is Vermont. But it more than makes up for it with gorgeous green mountains, rolling hills and charming villages. The foliage here is also beautiful in the fall. And take home some fresh maple syrup and cheddar cheese.

Our final stop is Maine. Best known for fishing villages, lighthouses and rocky beaches, Maine is alluring in its own way. Ogunquit is one of the popular travel destinations in Maine with a lovely theatre, plenty of artists and specialty shopping. And of course, you have got to have some lobster.
